The NCAA South Regional here in Memphis, Tennessee is a who’s who of NCAA tournament championship history.  The top three teams in championships won, are in this region.  UCLA leads the way as the all-time leader with 11, Kentucky is following closely behind with 8 and North Carolina, who is tied at third with 5 championships, make up three-fourths of the South Region field.  Butler University, which is the fourth team, may not hold up to the standards of the other three teams, but the Bulldogs from Butler have been to two Final Fours in the last eight years, so that is not a bad resume either. Indianapolis – The NCAA Basketball Committee may do a lousy job sometimes with picking the brackets and the teams that make up the field of 68 teams.  But one thing you can say for sure about them and CBS Sports is they go out of their way to set up made for TV storylines.   Continue reading Kentucky “Shocks” Wichita State with a 65-62 Win

Nashville, TN – In the semi-final round of the SEC tournament, Kentucky got off to a rocky start as Alabama took an early 9-2 lead.  The Wildcats had four turnovers and only one basket in the first four minutes of play.  Sophomore guard Isaiah Briscoe had two fouls less than three minutes into the game and had to take a seat on the bench, which didn’t help. A Big Blue packed house at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee witnessed the Kentucky Wildcats put down the Georgia Bulldogs for a third time this season.  The 71-60 win was a good start for Kentucky in this 2017 SEC tournament.  The Wildcats had steady play from two of their three-backcourt players.  Both Isaiah Briscoe and DeAron Fox each had 20 points to lead the Cats, while the third member Malik Monk struggled for the second game in a row.  Monk had scored in double figures in 29 straight games, before he failed to reach the double-digit mark in the last two.  Despite Monk’s struggles, the Wildcats still were able to take home the victory. Cats’ weakness exposed again in 79-73 loss to Kansas.  The Wildcats have struggled this season when teams either pack in their defense or go to a zone.  Kentucky raced out to a 12-point lead early in the first half this past Saturday, but sloppy play when Kansas went into a zone at the end of the half allowed the Jayhawks to close within five points (32-27) at the break.  The Cats failure to close out the first half with a strong run allowed Kansas to gain some momentum and carry it over into the second half for their win.
