They can exercise the same rights in censoring you here that you can exercise in your own living room. While the public is entitled to its uses, it’s still private property.
Everyone has house rules and they have every right enforce those rules, I can’t come to your house and just say anything I please because it’s your house, you would have every right to ask me to leave if I did. The same applies here, this is Topix’s house and the forums mods and admins are required to uphold Topix’s rules.(However they might not always do so)

There hundreds of places on the internet that allow filth, slanderous comments and outright attacks in the name of the first amendment, but none as bad as Topix. This site, run by a group in Palo Alto, California, allows attacks on everyone from children, schools, community officials, the elderly to local pastors from your church. In fact, in one of the local Topix sites, out of their first 100 threads, 97 had posts that directly violate, their own terms of Service and are littered with posts that violate slander, liable and defamation laws. That may all becoming to an end very soon though, and it couldn’t happen soon enough.
Several lawyers and dozens of people we have talked to including people from the Attorney Generals Office in California, have said, enough is enough. First and foremost, what is being requested is that Topix institute a registration system to better track the offenders who apparently have nothing better to do than to attack people without having to register. Secondly, if the court agrees, all ISP’s, of those making the derogatory posts, will be turned over to attorneys for those individuals who request to be included in this movement. This has nothing to do with freedom of speech, but more to hold those who make these slanderous comments to be held for their comments.

This is movement is for anyone and everyone who has had their name posted on Topix and was defamed, slandered, or outright lied about. The people making these posts need to be held accountable for their posts. This will surely allow people who were slandered to be able to be part of a class action suit seeking monetary compensation and bans placed on Topix as well as those who post slanderous comments while hiding behind a computer.

1) you must submit a request for Topix to remove the derogatory post and or thread.
2) You must copy and paste the derogatory post to a Word Document. Email this document along with the following:

It does not matter what town you are from to join this event. Simply email us your document containing the attack on you. Please understand, this will not happen over night. Our main goal right now is to stop those making these attacks, then to find out who they are, and finally, make them pay for there attacks. We expect Topix to fully cooperate once all the information has been filed and the participation of those slandered begin to take shape.
Topix has shown it has become the breeding ground for cowards who have to hide behind a computer and slander others. These type of people must learn this is not how society works nor accepts this type of behavior without severe consequences.

Ban the whole site. I’m serious . Shut it down. Topix does not do much. Your account gets pulled d for oneday then you are back on. This site is filled with racism, hate speeches, trolling, threats, and even people harssing our laws. WV threads are bad4 that. This site is built for mentally ill people & not normal people. Some of these folks attack the dead and kids.Myspace now has where once you are reported you can not sign up again on it they’ll know by your ip’s. AOL pulls every post you’ve posted on and your account till you pay again to have it back. Lastime I checked it was about between $40-$60. They don’t do anything unless they know u break terms of service.

My kids has been attacked in logan wv. I am shocked by kentucky & wv threads. And topix allows mentally ill adults & kids who still know better to bash kids on topix. My daughter has been attacked on 2 threads because of her height/disability by jlo a topix user. He’s attacked other topix users in the past. This has been going on for a year.

I am really glad to have found this site. Attacking TOPIX with lawsuits has been expensive and unrewarding. TOPIX has found a very lucrative market out of hosting annonymous forums that are preferentially treated by google and which, unlike typical newspaper and tv site forums are never archived. As a result, not only can people suffer immediate damage from any post that anyone wants to make about them, they can deal with this online defamation, hate, racism and lying for YEARS on end.

The whole management team including CEO Chris Tolles need to be personally responsible for the dozens of people whose lives have been trashed because of his site. And he justifies that because he is sucessful (meaning he has lots of traffic) that he is justified.

I haven’t read all 117 comments that were here before I saw this article… but I did read some. Seems like EastKY News has a similar problem to Topix.
And an important note: libel is written. Slander is verbal. Both are defamation of character.
Therefore, Topix cannot be guilty of allowing “slanderous” posts on their website.
Although, I was recently attacked on their site and they refused to remove (so far) the thread altogether. Since the thread was about my husband and I, and since we both notified them that we did not want our names as a topic, we felt they should be reasonable and remove it. It was meant to harass and libel us. They haven’t taken it down yet and that’s a dang shame.
I’m having my attorney look it all over and we’ll go from there as to what avenues we can pursue to get at least THAT post taken down. Maybe if enough individuals brings suit about their topics against Topix, then the whole site will crumble.
The idea of Topix was a good one. But as with a lot of good ideas, sometimes it gets hijacked and taken advantage of.
